How Can I Make Sure That My Implants Last?

Posted .

Dental implants are a great way to replace the missing teeth in your smile. Dental implants are brushed and flossed just like your natural teeth. Your implants are composed of prosthetic teeth mounted titanium posts that have been placed directly into your jawbone. This not only makes your implants very sturdy but because your jawbone grows around your implants, it becomes stronger as well. To be a good candidate for implants, you need to have healthy gums and jawbones. There are also certain medical conditions and medications that may keep you from receiving implants, and you should talk with your dentist about your medical history before electing to have implants placed.

If you take proper care of your implants, they can last up to 25 years. But remember, you are the main factor in their success. You will need to follow your dentist’s directions about the aftercare of your implants and your follow-up visits. The time after your implants are placed is very important, and if you do not follow your dentist’s instructions, your implants can fail. Your implants need a healthy mouth. Because of that, you need to brush your teeth at least twice a day, floss once a day, and see your dentist for your regular cleanings and exams. Your implants also depend on your gums for success. If you use tobacco or drugs, you are at risk for gum disease, which can cause your implants to fail. Finally, if your bite is not properly aligned and your teeth strike each other at improper angles your implants can be damaged.
